PhD circular economy researcher (researcher profile) – Working thesis description (2024-)
Oscar is a PhD researcher at the Global Sustainability Institute, Anglia Ruskin University, funded by a scholarship from the Faculty of Business & Law. His research examines the social (soft, immaterial) and technological (hard, material) dimensions of the circular economy to understand how different visions, or imaginaries, shape the future economy, focussing on architecture and the built environment as a case study. He uses a drawing-based interview methodology, developed as part of his research, to investigate how sustainable futures are negotiated and enacted in the United Kingdom and the Kingdom of Bhutan.
In 2020, Oscar co-founded Future Shift, a Bristol-based sustainability consulting start-up. During his time as Creative Director, he developed a SaaS-based platform to support businesses through sustainability certifications, facilitated a range of corporate sustainability workshops and courses, and worked with organisations including Airbus UK and Dunelm to support sustainability education within their graduate scheme programmes. To date, Future Shift has supported over 100 businesses through B Corp certification and continues to operate in London and Dublin.
Oscar holds a BSc and an MEng in Sustainable Biotechnology from Aalborg University, Copenhagen. He has written on the relationship between Buddhism and the circular economy in Bhutan (2019), as well as on the global diffusion of biogas technology during an internship at WIP Renewable Energies in Munich (2020). He is currently based in Cambridge for the next few years.
